| Vaison-la-Romaine:
It’s worth the trip ! Dominated by the Mont Ventoux, the “Giant of the Provence”, Vaison-la-Romaine offers you a luxuriant nature and will charm you with its diversity and its landscapes The “Cité des Voconces” gathers in one location the authentic charm of old stones, its Festivals, the prestigious choral singing and an authentic “art de vivre”. Once called Vasio, this town became famous thanks to her cultural and archeological heritage (from antiquity to modern times). The gallo-roman remnants are spread over 15 ha. This makes Vaison-la-Romaine the largest archeological field in France. These ancient sites gave Vaison it’s denomination ‘La Romaine’ in 1924 During the XI and XIIth century,Vaison, which had become catholic in the meantime, expanded with the Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth cathedral and its the monastery and the with St. Quenin chapel. The medieval city, situated on the hill, dominates the modern town with its impressive castel of the “Comptes de Toulouse”. The medieval city contains numerous little spots, fountains, little streets and façades of houses and hotels, which have been remarkably well preserved throughout the years. |
